Queen’s School of Business Academic Named CA Professor

Under the CA Professorship program, the Institute provides funding to help distinguished academics continue important research in accounting. Funding is $50,000 per year for five years and is renewable for five-year terms after that.

“Daniel Thornton is an excellent selection to receive this type of funding from the Institute. He is a well-recognized and respected professor in Canada and internationally,” said Brian Hunt, the Institute’s President and CEO. “He also has a long history of commitment to the CA Profession, not just in Ontario but across the country. In fact, he is one of only a few people to be elected a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (FCA) of both Ontario and Alberta.”

Professor Thornton’s research has been widely published in several top accounting journals including the Accounting Review and Contemporary Accounting Research. He is known for his work in helping to develop accounting PhD programs at leading universities, including Queen’s, and for his ongoing mentorship of accounting students. He is also a recipient of the Haim Falk Award for Distinguished Contribution to Accounting Thought from the Canadian Academic Accounting Association.

“I am delighted to receive the first Chartered Accountants Professorship at Queen’s School of Business,” said Thornton. “For decades, the Ontario Institute has been investing heavily in accounting’s intellectual infrastructure by funding doctoral education and promoting teaching excellence in bachelors and masters programmes.

 “The establishment of this highly visible research professorship signals that, under Dean Saunders’ leadership, Queen’s longstanding partnership with the profession has come of age — that the profession values our research as highly as our teaching. In the next five years, this generous funding will significantly further my research in financial accounting. It will also enhance the School’s ability to recruit and retain the very best faculty and students to teach and study at Queen’s. I look forward to continuing to work with Queen’s excellent accounting faculty members, all of whom are worthy candidates for similar support,” said Thornton.

David Saunders, Dean, Queen’s School of Business said that the Institute’s funding of this professorship demonstrates the strong and growing relationship between the CA profession and Queen’s School of Business. “This type of funding makes it possible for our students to benefit from the knowledge and experience of top academics like Dan Thornton, a widely respected teacher, researcher and author,” said Saunders.

The Professorship Program is a component of the Institute’s larger program of support for Ontario University Accounting Programs and Accounting Faculty. This program also includes the creation and support of joint CA/University Centres in conjunction with Institute accreditation of accounting programs and/or accounting streams within business programs, the Doctoral Studies Support Program, the ICAO Centre for Advancement in Accounting Education, the Small Faculty Project Support initiative and the Faculty Colleague Program. In aggregate, the Institute has committed up to one million dollars annually to Ontario’s university system.
