2005-04-05 - A remarkable team of Commerce students from Dr. Peggy Cunningham’s COM338 Marketing Ethics course implemented an idea that proved to be a great success not only in class, but also for the not-for-profit organization they helped.
Team members Bob Cornwall (BCom’06), Alexandra Lea (BCom’06), Jaimee Goodman (BCom’06), Chistophe Breuil (BCom’Exchange), and Michael Lobsinger (BCom’05) utilized their project to launch an awareness and fundraising campaign for the Assaulted Women’s Helpline by planning an event at Stage’s Night Club a popular downtown attraction.
The team elected to take on this project after alumnae Sandra Diaz (BCom’95), Manager of Resource Development for the Assaulted Women’s Helpline, spoke to the class about the organization. The impact of this lecture was such that they decided to build on the two areas Mrs. Diaz viewed most in need: creating awareness in the Kingston area, and generating funds for the not-for-profit organization.
The group’s goal to create awareness was achieved through the Pink Campaign. This campaign involved distributing flyers containing information on the Assaulted Women’s Helpline and how to become involved with the charity. The entire team also wore sandwich-board signs while promoting their event and distributing pink bracelets to add to the awareness on campus.
The event, a ‘Pink and Blue’ party held at Stage’s Night Club, (which also made a donation to the Assaulted Women’s Helpline) proved very successful. Over 180 people attended the gathering bearing pink bracelets or tickets in show of support, a great turn out on a Thursday night before the Easter holiday weekend. The sale of candy bracelets at the event augmented the team’s donation to the organization. Sponsors, including The Body Shop, 297, Beauty Bar, The Beach and Stage’s Night Club, in addition to the Assaulted Women’s Helpline, provided merchandise for goodie bags handed out to the first 50 people showing up at the event wearing a bracelet or holding a ticket.
This team is the first on Queen’s University campus to work with the Assaulted Women’s Helpline, and their input is now helping other organizations coordinate similar events and campaigns. Congratulations to these bright, caring students for creating much needed awareness and raising funds for this great organization.
