Curriculum

The Centre will play a critical role in keeping Queen’s School of Business at the forefront of teaching entrepreneurial and business venturing skills. Perhaps more importantly, it will afford our students the opportunity to gain invaluable business venturing experience. In the end, we’re not just teaching people to be entrepreneurs – we’re teaching them how to understand and work with entrepreneurs, and how to encourage entrepreneurial thinking in a corporate environment.

We believe that no one should graduate from Queen's School of Business without having been exposed to leading edge thinking and practice in the entrepreneurial context.

Business venturing is now part of the core curriculum in all of our MBA programs. As well we have established elective courses for students wishing to delve deeper into this exciting area. The Centre for Business Venturing is generating a series of real-world case studies to enhance the learning experience. Each year a New Business Plan Competition is held in our MBA and Commerce programs. Several of our student entrepreneurs have been invited to pitch their ideas to “angel investors” on ROB TV.

In 2004, the Queen’s School of Business New Ventures Club hosted the first annual Queen’s University Entrepreneurial Summit (QUEST), which featured a series of expert speakers, followed by a Business Concept Competition. This summit is now an annual forum for entrepreneurial-minded business students from across Canada and the U.S. It provides the opportunity for students to meet, network and benefit from the experiences and knowledge of venture fund managers, successful entrepreneurs, legal advisors and faculty. Please keep watch for the date of the upcoming QUEST conference!

Other exciting student initiatives include the Wes Nicol Kingston Intercollegiate Business Plan Competition In the late fall, students at Queen’s, RMC and St. Lawrence College will have the opportunity to both collaborate and compete! Students can form teams from within their own classes, or diversify their team by mixing members from different schools, departments and faculties. All teams – regardless of membership – are eligible for a share of the $10,000 in prizes that are available for the most promising entrepreneurial ideas. The winning team will also have the chance to win the National Nicol Award in Ottawa.

Details on this competition will be made available in the early fall of 2005; please be sure to return to this website periodically for the latest information!
